Mughal-e-Funk is out with the video for their composition — Akbar

Mughal-e-Funk is a contemporary instrumental fusion/funk band and they can easily be credited for getting instrumental music the limelight it deserves in the country. The band members include; Kami Paul on drums, Rufus Shahzad on synths and keyboard, Rakae Jamil on sitar and Farhan Ali on the bass.

The Mughals left a great impact on sub-continent’s history and culture. To date it lives on through the much celebrated architecture. The band’s name is also inspired by the Mughal Era and the tracks are named after the various emperors of that time.

As shared through their social media, the compositions are their musical interpretations of the lives and cultural contributions of the emperors in the realms of art, music, poetry and literature.

The band released their debut EP, Sultanat in 2018 via Rearts and it has six tracks. It’s associated artwork is a nice blend of the era which is the foundation of the band’s music and the funky grove that they have added to it. Credit for this goes to Aman Asif Lone, for apt visual representation of Mughal-e-Funk’s music.

Recently, the band has released the video of one of their tracks, Akbar and it is as unique as their music. The video uses the technique of rotoscoping, an animation technique used to trace over motion picture footage, frame by frame. Here is the full video.

The band plans to continue learning about the times of the Mughal era and making exciting discoveries about them through their music. Currently, they are working on their upcoming full length album and I for one am really looking forward to it.
