Blue eggs in nest. Decorative.

Life is the buzz coming from the hive,
live to slurp honey from the wax.

Life is the geometry of a spider’s web,
live to witness the panic of its prey.

Life is a nest with spotted blue eggs,
live to hear the cracking of the shell.

Life is the swat from a ruminant’s tail,
live to taste milk warm from the teat.

Life is to crawl under the melon vine,
live to split the sweetness on a sharp rock.

Life is to spade sand on a hot beach,
live to touch the coolness sprung.

Life is tag in an open field,
live to wipe the sweat pouring out.

Life is to change diapers overnight
live to smell the sweetness of a baby’s burp.

Life is a child leaning on the world
live to see the globe roll, pick up speed.

This poem was written before I had my own kids, probably around the time my siblings started having their kids.
