A Dangerous Pill
Poetry
We must each lead a way of life with self-awareness and compassion and do as much as we can. Then, whatever happens, we will have no regrets. — Dalai Lama
Our polluted skies are grey
from the smoke of our deeds.
Oceans are overflowing
with our neediness and greed.
Cities grow like concrete beasts;
forests are destroyed by our feasts.
While the world goes up in flames,
we use the smoke to hide our shame.
Even with open eyes, many don’t see
the cost of our chronic apathy.
Those who think the earth is fine
are missing all its warning signs.
And while I’m grateful I can see,
awareness takes its toll on me.
I see the world in all its madness;
amidst cruelty and sadness.
All the people hurting and dying
pain my soul; there’s no denying.
Truth’s a knife that hurts like hell.
It makes me cry; it makes me yell.
It makes me mentally unwell.
