We walked to the pond you and I
in the deep of night in forest dark
crusts of moonlight at our feet
scattered like forgotten rind
and I thought then
what I know now,
Your heart’s too pure
too pure for mine

How can it be that your true reasons
are the same as the ones you’ve given?
No ulterior, no agenda hidden
the you you show is your true self
no mask and no pretenses

Me, I have my guile, my sleight of hand
my fortress and my fences
and like the tortoise I maintain a shell
protecting my soft inner self
the shield of my defenses

We are a pair
shining angel
wary tortoise,
Can we withstand
the tides of time?
You think we will
but I have doubts,
Your heart’s too pure
too pure for mine

Thanks for reading…
