Artificial Paradise

A poem.

Getty Museum Garden (Author’s photo).

the flowers stared back
with their pink hues
and reddish streaks
flustered in their faces
exactly how I looked
when I said
I couldn’t,
just wouldn’t,
live without you

but the flowers know
we speak only words
for that day,
it will come
surely it will
we can deny it
but the flowers know

we created
an artificial
paradise
just like we talked
to the fake plants
as if they would grow
and how we tell each other
I’ll never let you go
but the flowers know

they cannot wilt
but we will,
wilt away
and shrivel and fall into dust
while the flowers
live on in the world
we thought was made
only for us
