Hard Frost

The first hard frost is not a pretty sight
for anything left naked out of doors.

The cutting edge of winter rends without remorse
the tender grass, crisps the leaves,
and scythes the summer flowers.

Yet some find hard frost beautiful,
of diamond brightness and unearthly calm.

With eager hearts they fervently believe
that winter death is merely sleep
and withered flowers not a cause to weep.
