Humanity’s Struggle
Hoping unity is on the horizon

I walked twice as long
as I usually do this cloudy morning,
and in prayer.
Each step sending a plea for help
for those who are desperate,
and each breath confirming my place
in humanity’s struggle.
I took a different way today
because I needed to
think and not think,
feel and become numb,
move and be still.
Up and down the hills,
past the old houses made new,
past some young people gathering to protest
I walked, wanting to wear myself out
until I could feel certain
that love will win.
But there was nothing –
just sweat and exhaustion
and my desire to tell you this:
Let’s walk together.
Thank you for joining me here.
