The house wasn’t empty,
But I was alone
With the sound of a piano
Played in an empty room
And the glare of the sun
Caught obliquely in the window by my arm.
I wanted something in that moment,
The sensation of distance
Begetting a longing I couldn’t name.
I waited for a beat or two,
Expecting to discover it.
Instead, the longing subsided
Into awareness bigger than the room.
The musical notes became feelings,
And the sunbeam was the light of understanding…
