Riding the Rollercoaster
What if all the ups and downs are nothing more than hormones?
If all my joys and irritations are simply chemical equations
there seems no reason to attempt to affect the solution.
Whether this is Zen wisdom or depressive defeatism,
right now it only seems annoying.
I strongly suspect my present restless dissatisfaction
has something to do with neurons or uptake receptors
and not much to do with logic or events outside my brain.
Whether I try to think positive or feel the pain matters less
than knowing all emotions fade away.
And while I wait and write about it, in an ironic twist,
naming the mental state assists to loosen its grip,
reminding me it’s actually not so pointless to use
the tricks I’ve learned to help the bad moods quickly pass
and encourage the rare, golden moments to last.
