The beguilement of a sandy beach
dotted with blankets and folding chairs,
the swelling surf beckoning a hundred feet away
crashing with glee as it races to the shore.

But to get to the water on this blazing day
my bare feet must hop across a griddle of sand
avoiding collisions with manic children
and their unwieldy toys

while trying to prevent in my frantic race
the unseemly act of kicking sand
into the eyes of drowsy sunbathers
or amorous couples locked in embrace.

Finally reaching my goal, the packed wet sand
where the cool water soothes my stinging feet,
feeling a thrill of contentment and relief,
the shy second cousin to more tempestuous pleasures.

Such happiness now just to stand and gaze
at the jade-green sea and the ceaseless waves
with no feeling except one of simple peace,
gathering strength, as I must, for the burning road back. . .

This wonderful piece is the lucky entrant in Scribe’s writing prompt for July 2023. Find out more about the theme and how to submit your work! ✨
