Naturally, we shirk pain
we avoid it ignore it numb it
in booze-pills-sex-shopping
addiction/compulsion/need

here’s a thought: hold it close
take your pain and squeeze
it into something hard and shiny
stuff it into your deepest pocket

but never forget it’s there waiting
not to maim you not to ruin the day
think of pain as gift at your disposal
you’re alive! you get to feel! you are

never beholden to that which hurts
own this gift — it is a catalyst to change.
