Poetry
The Overture
New day breaks so softly
Through the window
Yawning
Slow and sweet
Leaks light like honey on the floor
Twisted bedsheets
And the thrum of still young saplings
As they sway and break and beat
Tap Tap Tap goes their rejoinder
Like a witty repartee
and I pray
For stillness in this moment
Ever-after
An infinity of day
I’ve been weary for so long
Held my cards against my chest
I have died at least a thousand times
And laid my soul to rest
In the arms of the ocean
Feel devotion like a wave
It just crashes over me
Put your mouth on my mouth
Put your body next to me
Drag me down
Way down
Right down to the bottom of everything
And all I see
Are charcoal lashes
Feel the warmth of velvet sea
Just You
And Me
Amber in the afterglow
Taste truffle on my tongue
You are the bluest night
Golden light
Green eyes like the summertime
And everything intensifies
Until. I come. Undone.
And if heartbreak is the answer
Make me Natasha in this scene
And if heartbreak is the answer
I want you to ruin me.
Author’s Note:
Natasha Rostova, having been seduced by the dashing and unconscionable Anatole, has contrived to elope. She is confronted by her dearest friend, Sonya, who says, “I’m afraid you’ll ruin yourself”. The scandal comes to a head and in a scene of hysterical resignation, Natasha proclaims “… I will, I will, I’ll ruin myself as soon as possible”. Love can be desperately short sighted in its urgency — consequences be damned.
