A conversation with a poet

Show me what you’ve written
— but don’t risk an explanation
undermining the riddle of your labor.

Let your poems rise like the sun
— but don’t let shade shelter,
let me bask bare in the splendor.

Let your words soar toward heaven
— but don’t let me dampen
the flight in your angels’ wings.

Let your rhymes flow like zephyrs
— but don’t let them cool
the heat of what’s been written.

Let meter beat the drums
— but don’t let the pulsing
keep my skin from goosebumps.
