After Seeing Superman
Poem
For 57 years of life, I’ve known
who this is a job for, and I’ve known
it’s my job, too.
“Evil must be destroyed,”
said Baraka,
“I want to be a force for good,”
said Trane.
“Do the next right thing,”
said my sponsor.
“Make it a great day,”
said my Mom.
“Up, up, and away,”
said Superman (1940)
I have no way
of accounting for
the talismanic
nature of the “S.”
Why does it still get me???
You see fascistic thuggery
I see a hometown hero,
an alien conjured out
of the imaginations of two
bullied Jewish kids,
still there to be shared
with my kids, 57 years
into my life. They tolerate
my fondness for simplistic
mythic epic ethical optimistic
four-color weirdness.
I tolerate their toleration.
That joy never sleeps.
