with weary eyes pressed closed,
and mind cracked wide open,
i find myself surrounded by
my spirit’s inner hauntings—
heart thrumming to the tune
of an intricate song i lost long ago.

trees made from my calcified bones
howl a harmony with the breeze—
taloned fingers splayed outwards—
cutting into my veil of stardust—
skewing my belladonna crown—
i tumble into the awaiting darkness.

sinking, and vanishing beneath
the moon-drenched undergrowth—
held within the cold arms of past
nightmares that are dead, and gone—
falling onto my knees in the moss.

the ghosts of the forest anoint me
with drops from the river styx—
feeding me sprigs of nightshade,
and milky white oleander petals,
until my throat burns with rebirth.

gliding through the hazy forest—
like the blushing bride of death—
i summon my demons to my breast,
holding their horned heads in my
glowing hands—watching them
slowly melt beneath the flowing
holy water of our collective tears.

blood roses bloom beneath my feet—
i kiss the darkness goodbye as it
caresses my glimmering cheek
one final time—relinquishing me
into the engulfing arms of dying stars.

i awake to the sun’s persistent touch
against my fluttering eyelids—
the bittersweet taste of letting go
still coating my languid tongue.
