A poem

you’re so beautiful, she said
an astute comment rising
to the surface
recognizing my eyes in the muck
the thickening soup
that was her memory
comparatively, she picked
at the ridges on her nails
she frowned disapproval
as if once again disdain
for this texture reminded
her that she was losing herself,
her mind, her direction
eroding the solid ground
of her understanding
I held her shaking hand then
dipped the brush and gently
