Dear Scrittura Writers,

I began offering prompts in Scrittura in June this year — one prose poem and one poetry prompt each month. I so appreciate every creative soul who responded to them — and we’ve published some fantastic pieces.

The Art of Prompting: What I Love, What I’ve Learnt

I love the process of hunting down an idea and creating a prompt around it — although it can sometimes be a wee bit stressful when it takes more time than you’d prefer, or the ideas don’t come on cue! I have a persistent perfectionistic streak (let’s call her Miss Priss) that I constantly have to tell to pipe down — reminding her I only have to incite a spark from other writers, not a blazing fire.

I know my prompt style is quite different from JD’s. A “learning” from my first prose poem prompt was my enthusiasm made me write a “War and Peace” prose poem, which I realized in hindsight could be a little overwhelming to some! (Err, no, Miss Priss, I don’t have to cover every idea associated with the prompt. Let’s leave some for the writers, shall we?) I later cut a whole section out and then worked on writing shorter examples thereafter.
