Saturnalia by Antoine Callet

Good lord’s strut, reduced forthwith to a wimp unsightly,
Dismissed in whole tonight, I shall forgo all my duty,
May I now, where’s my lady?
Flip of the days, we have a king to mock, the Lord of Misrule¹,
for tonight the order of the day, is utmost chaos in disarray!

Gifts to spare for the ones who mattered all year through,
This very monumental signillaria², from me to you,
Hop on to the beat of merriment,
Cascading that happiness downwards dancing with glee,
Greetings galore in those days of Io Saturnalia³!

The weight of the matter heavy on shoulders remain,
But the eye to see thru the hourglass you can change,
Sage of time’s epiphany we embrace with each turn,
Spin around we shall, therefore to see through another way!

Viraji Ogodapola

What is it that makes you dance with glee? That which makes you spin around without a care dwelling in on the very moment of merriment?

As we are nearing the end of our calendar year, the prompt for this week is about that pull that gives you the push to go on rolling. Keeping in line with J.D. Harms’ vision of exploring festivities other than Christmas for the month, tell us about that one thing that makes you jump with joy and makes you want to go around another spin of repeat?

Or, perhaps, would you rather pause, ponder and reflect? Either way, your work should capture the gist of that reason for celebration.

Meanwhile, some 2.5 million light years away…

  • 1,2,3: Saturnalia is a midwinter celebration in Ancient Rome that lasted for several days. It is a time for feasting, partying, playing games, gift-giving and role-reversal. “Lord of Misrule” is the name given to the chosen mock king, usually a lowlier member of the household in playing the game of reversed roles and making mischief during celebrations. Signillaria is a small terracotta figurine that the Romans gave their friends and loved ones during the season.
