July Came Knocking
Poetry — Prompt Wednesday 30 June 2021: Pretend You’re Mad
July came knocking,
like a thief,
skinny dipping
as some wayward drunkard, diving off the dock at dawn,
bringing me that much closer to the brink of madness,
lost in unrequited love,
losing words like acronyms, atoning for my childhood sins,
pilfering my sanity with consequences and repercussions .
Penless, loveless and penniless.
July came knocking in a most presumptuous way,
it hadn’t heard that I had been detained,
and unable to hold my pen in hand,
meddling with my capsized brain — —
While melted children barrelled down the water slide,
since having fun, left them absolved and otherwise preoccupied,
and in their eyes, I was painted an invisible shade of grey
in shadows of obscurity.
The marketplace has since come back to life,
can you see me, though I try to hide?
there is no point to play pretend;
the torrid heat has embroiled me mad.
Sitting at the lovely cafe, I once again attempt to write.

Many thanks to editor J.D. Harms and Scrittura publication for this most inspiring writing prompt.
In a sense, I’ve been capsized and paralyzed by unforeseen circumstances, but I’m hoping that reading and writing will help bring back some magic to the madness and insanity. Below are details, if you’d like to engage in this writing prompt:
