The truth hurts

The stinging spreads out from where
the thoughts pricked, sharp as thorns.
Logic’s sharp edges and keen details
pierced the soft beliefs that cushioned
the weight of reality when it became
too heavy. Reason whetted its sound
blade, poking holes in my faith.
The realizations that were released
bled across my brain, mind in bloom.
I swallowed the bitter fruit,
and let it sink into my stomach
to digest; the fact of the matter
was rotten. I said I preferred the fiction,
and when I opened my mouth, flies fell out,
dazed and drunk on the dreams that were
my subsistence for so many seasons.

I saw the sun lighting the earth from
my rightful place, my feet firmly on the planet
next to grains of dirt and right above
rocks digging into the pink, naive flesh
of soles that never developed the callous
needed to walk on solid ground. I’ve been
walking on air, on the tops of clouds,
but today the sky is a stark blue,
with nothing to stand on but observations
opening like buds, fresh findings I never…
