Music of Light
Saturday prompt response: revise a favourite line
Alongside a stream coursing down boulders
in a rain-fed ravine, through mercurial mists
a tribe of musicians, the ultraviolet thrushes
whistle while foraging in crystalline euphoria
That’s how the tranquility trills
Stung by daily grudges and ploughing workload
they shout on each other many nights a week
a raw germination in an unanticipated exploration
confiscating their rhyming energies to core
That’s how the purpose fill in
Labyrinthine brain wet with anxious awareness
the icicles devoid of light suddenly shatter
white clouds flap with sympathetic needles
beeps shrink swell, respiration ruptures
That’s how the death spills
mulling over illumining depths of dreams
ash ‘n’ snow mindscape in cubist scheme
burnt orange scents of rippling sweet qahwa
in amber glow of cups furrow flaky moonlight
That’s how the light gets in
constellations as forest fireflies dot the dark
specks of cosmic dust tangled in warps of time
sprawl in divine proportion on craters in space
I let inner light effuse through my porous shell
That’s how the awakening sets in.

In response to the Saturday prompt ‘revise a favourite line’ by J.D. Harms in Scrittura. I chose lines from Leonard Cohen’s ‘Anthem’ –
“There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.”
