Newton, You Failed Me

My first crush in school
was this boy, a Physics geek.
I thought it wise to resort
to your laws to get him to like me.

Your law of attraction, I read:
Attraction: Linear to mass, inverse to distance;
word by word, over and again,
with boxes of pizza next to me.
Then, with the weight thus gained
deliberately over a summer break,
closest to him I sat in class —
but not once did he return my glance.

Disappointed now,
set to forget, I turned
to your law of inertia of rest:
What’s at rest will remain so, until acted upon.
I rested my love, I buried my heart.
Yet, without any outside force
it still grew, threatening to explode.

Unable to restrain, I now turned
to your second law of motion:
Acceleration is directly related to force.
Force I used on him towards me;
he did accelerate, but away from me.

Now desperate for his love,
with no place else to turn,
I looked up your third law of motion:
For every action is an equal and opposite reaction.
Certain again, I earnestly confessed
my love: poured it out on paper,
and slipped it inside his book.
Trusting your word yet again, I
waited with bated breath, hopeful still,
for a sign, an affectionate return.
Through till the end, he read my note
then throwing an amused little smirk,
calling me silly, he tore it up into pieces.

The note, my heart, my faith beyond all
in the absolute laws of physics —
tiny little bits, crushed in his hands.
Misplaced from my core,
derailed from my orbit,
tossed from chaos to chaos,
I now search for my center;
skeptical of your gravitational laws.
