Low tide
blue sky, punishing sun,
Chatham Beach, fifty-three
years ago, wind enough for kites
chills in the water. This
is a lot of sensation for a 4-year old.

Following my old man, who was then young,
through the shallows, watching
the sunburn on his back get away from me.
Falling behind. Little.
Salt, sand, sound, sun
uncomfortable!
Probably tired — of course, tired!
Whining, crying
WAIT!
UP!
Stepping on a horseshoe crab!
Remember that day
the rest of my life.
