You are Orpheus and
You don’t really know
What happened, but something is off.
No witnesses except the Shepherd
The Shepherd said,
“I saw her dancing with
The nymphs” but the nymphs
Can’t be be found.

You know the Shepherd
He’s had problems before.
People are lying to you.
You are lying to them.
Weeping.
Lamentations.
Make it look good.

“And where does the viper fit in?”
You wonder you wonder
No one has seen the bite marks
The bite marks or the viper
In the tall grass.

You are the Shepherd
You found her in the tall grass, you say
Your friend, you found her in the grass, you say
And now they’re all whispering
Everyone’s whispering
“That guy will fucking kill you if he finds out.”
