Postcard Poetry
A prose poetry prompt from October 5th, 2023 writing session
What is Postcard Poetry?
Postcard poetry is usually a short prose poem that fits on a postcard and captures a certain feeling, an ambiance, the character of a certain place and the connection (or disconnect) to the person being sent the postcard.
There were ten minutes on the clock to write a postcard poem during workshop.
What to write? I came up with my own interpretation based on the mood I was in — a string of heartfelt words, basically a somewhat poetic sentence. An extra fifteen focused minutes after class to edit and voila, there was my little inspired postcard poetry.
Postcard Poetry — Greetings from New York City

my dearest ami,
greetings from the hustle and bustle
of New York City, this place filled with honking taxis,
tall buildings, street peddlers and all sorts of people spinning by —
in such a rush to get wherever they are going — exciting faceless strangers never stopping to say hello. I get lost in the noise and the freshly brewed poetry of the city and when I stop for just a moment, I somehow find the beauty of my thoughts drifting back to you. xoxo
An Amazing Writing Session
How amazing to attend writing sessions led by editor, writer, teacher Samantha Lazar. Tonight’s session helped me better understand
the anatomy of prose poetry. Thanks, Samantha!
How wonderful to meet up with other Medium writers and soak in the creative energy and participation in the Zoom room. I don’t know why —
but I felt like a kid in a candy store.
How inspiring to write a postcard poem from a concept prompt by editor/writer Mary L. Holden. I feel I can write a few more stories
based on the injected nuances of her prompt that entice the imagination. Thanks, Mary!
