Rest

Given rest
like a snake along the highway
to Narcisse
evidencing & not avoiding
the harm that comes
from the edges of wheels
The calm of the crematorium
suddenly infecting everything
even your arrival
seems somehow forced
as though this were accidentally in front of you
on your way to something else
but I don’t know…
the iconoclast who did that painting in
I don’t know that red eyes
see real clear
also: are any of us
really
given pre-death rest?
