being alone, together

this is it,
we’ve been left to our own devices.
simultaneously more alone and together,
a scatologic experience of the highest order.

each day, be yourself for someone else, through their eyes,
experience your world with others, in your own way.
being one and an other is a realistic impossibility;
one with an other, perpetual contact and conflict.

ironic isn’t it, this belongingless,
the shrinking of the world, outpaced by the inflation of the self.
the space between made to appear so minuscule,
but only by the growth of our egos.

like a velvet curtain across the stage of connectedness,
less and less of what (re)produces the world is visible to us.
watching every consequence from the seat of the toilet,
we know everything and nothing, all at once.

at all times, in all places, we are together;
we can talk, share, love and hate together.
increasingly, we do so in narcissistic isolation,
alone with our thoughts, our pasts, our selves.

in belongingness, we were satisfied, accepted, at ease;
protected by one house of mirrors or another.
in belongingless, we long for unattainable belonging,
sacrificing our reflections for that which lies just beyond our perception.

at a price and in a moment,
access to all I may ever want.
but, for that longing which I need,
how do I get out of my own way?
