They couldn’t see the damage

There was insufficient evidence
Of abuse
The committee said

She lowered her head
His smirk met her gaze
From across the room

“Open up my heart then”
She croaked

“What?”
She stood amongst
The puzzled faces

“Take a scalpel
Make an incision and
Cut open up my heart
You’ll find it there
Evidence”

“What could possibly-”

. .

It is coal
In my heart
Gaslit to ashes
And he held the torch

Call it a name
Any profanity
It will be irresistibly
Magnetically
Drawn to you

The heart brain connections
Are weakened
Severed

My brain no longer knows
That anger is not protection
That control is not love
