Laird got sucked into a portal
and found himself in a land of misfortune —
a dirty, desolate place
where he never felt safe,
always on the verge of being chased or hunted
down by one greedy fiend or another.

Laird had no idea what to do — he was alone
and there was no one to advise him
on how to live in this monstrous new world.

He spoke neither the language, nor
did he have much taste for the food.
The one person who he cared about
was the magical woman who created the portal.
She had said it would take them to a better place.
This woman’s name was Khalia.

Her years of sorcery enabled her to refine the spell
so perfectly. Laird had been certain
that there was no way they’d ever end up
somewhere worse than the miserable
village where they already lived
for nearly a decade.
