Off-beat
Alternatively, “Somehow Town”
there is often
an off-beat
antagonistical rhythm
to this life
our existence
100 miles from nowhere
where three rivers bend
and catch up
before heading out to sea
growing up
in that Northeastern somehow town
every Spring
we’d be reminded
when the rivers
would overrun
their banks
down by Webb’s Superstore
on Main Street
and over by Piper’s Glen
behind Columbus Field
ice jams
abrupt reminders
of the preciousness of it all
of fortuity
of survival
you know
it had me thinking
how survival spawns courage
it really does
you know
that sink or swim
kind of courage
