pain is a signal

sometimes you’re so tired
you want to cry
no one ever tells you
the clock could be
so cruel…
that the night
doesn’t like the day
that there are people
trembling just to
stay awake
I didn’t know eyes could
hurt so much from
the overuse
of prescription lenses
I didn’t know that if
you’re underactive enough,
or if you sit wrong
for too long on the couch
that your shoulder will
be fucked…
you’re just fucked
after a certain age —
the body no longer wants
to cooperate as much
and you can fight it,
you can combat the
ostensible wasting away
but just know yourself,
recognize it,
if all you’re doing is
delaying or dampening
an important sort of pain
…pain is a signal,
pain is communication,
open your stubborn head
and listen…
there are things wrong
with this world
and the people in it
that you can’t even fathom…
there are twisted things
in the hearts and expectations
of every human participating
in this unruly game,
intentions that you don’t even
want to uncover
because if you did,
you wouldn’t even
know how to be
a person anymore
