I don’t know why I sometimes stick
on a phrase or a comment, something said in haste —
a questionable word slipped out in a haphazard way…
then again, maybe it’s a half-hearted laugh
or a sideways little smile that says the rest —
it’s tough…
we’re all a little sensitive, you know, in our own
silly cowardly ways — we harp on the bad and
we notice all the faults — we’re charmed by the petty
and the pretty
and sold on the allure of good fortune…
