POETRY
the toll

…
I remember the night
I stopped running
to pay the price
of others’ expectations
and lay awake in the dark waiting
for the debit orders to bounce
at midnight
too tired to care anymore
and not in a defiant kinda way
in a couldn’t quite bother
treading water any longer
sigh
just stop fighting
let it go kinda way
because there wasn’t really much else
to do about it right then
was that surrender
or defeat
I wonder?
