What Love Is

Someone there to the end, together.

Two young children, one draping an arm over the other, both facing away from the camera, walking down a dirt/gravel road to a distance not established. Upon the sides of the road are brush that are bristlely, short, and dry grass.

Two people
Together as one;
Together,
To the end.

One asks the other:
What if I get old and
Can’t walk up the stairs?
What then?

So the other replies:
Well, if you are old
And can’t walk up the stairs,
Then I will carry you up the stairs.

Next they ask:
Ok, but what if I am old
And I am cold upon the chair?
What then?

So the other replies:
Well, if you are old
And cold upon the chair,
Then I will warm you with our stories of old.

But they weren’t done asking:
That is nice, but what if I am old
And the furnace is out; how do I stay physically warm?
What then?

The other considers and says:
Well, if you are old
And our furnace is no longer willing to provide heat,
Then I will cut down wood and make a fire for you.

Satisfied and secure,
But still curious to seek more
This friend attempts to ask
One more question, but is interrupted by the other:

When we are old, we will be old together;
Like now, we will be together as one;
Old, getting older
But together, always as one.

So,
When you can’t help yourself,
I will be that help you need; because,
That is what love is, my dear friend.

— The Why —

Aging comes to everyone who has traveled long enough on this Earth. For many, this is a scary part of the process. As we become older, weaker, and more frail the panic of what happens when we are too old to take care of ourselves settles in.

Though, for many of us along our travels we have been able to meet and incorporate into our lives other generous and beautiful souls. As we get old we may come to find that these beautiful souls are the same souls that we will come to rely upon.

Because — that is what love is.

Be well, my friends.
