I currently work as a Mechanical Project Engineer at the University of British Columbia, where I obtained my Masters Degree. Until recently, I worked for Manufacturing Automation Laboratory as a Mechanical Engineer focused on transferring the machining technology to the industries by optimizing the process. I am a registered Engineer-In-Training (EIT) in British Columbia. I immigrated from Turkey, where I completed bachelor degrees in Manufacturing Engineering, and Textile Sciences & Engineering. Since 2015, I have been one of the four Global Ambassadors of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE)- Canada, encouraging girls and women to pursue STEM careers.

Did you always know that working in Mechanical Engineering was what you wanted to do? How did you decide to go into this field?

Engineering chose me! I know life has itself full of engineering problems and I am a problem solver who loves working on technical challenges and staying creative on a daily basis. Engineering is part of our life and you can make your life easier being an engineer either at work or at home.

What advice would you give to young girls who are interested in science but don’t have the support network to live their dream life?

Don’t be so worried about what others think of you; don’t determine your path based on what you think others expect. This is your life and your career. If you do your job with love, I am sure you will achive the summit where you want to be.

What is the one piece of advice you would have given your younger self?

If I could give my younger self one more advice it would be to not be afraid of trying. This is not a mistake, as we can only learn what makes us happy or unhappy through our own experiences. Find your voice and don’t be afraid to use it.

What is your favorite quote?

“Don’t let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It’s your place in the world; it’s your life. Go on and do all you can with it, and make it the life you want to live.” — Mae Jemison, first African American woman astronaut in space.
