Recently, I applied for spiritual initiation from my friend Om Swami. One of my motives was to initiate people into a spiritual lineage. To my surprise, Swami declined my request, which initially felt like a setback but has since proven to be a profound learning experience. The Nature of Spiritual Initiation

Swami’s response to my request focused on a critical aspect of spiritual initiation or Deeksha: it involves taking on the karma of others and suffering on their behalf.

For those who live alone, like monks, this responsibility impacts only them. But for those with families, this burden extends to their loved ones. It causes undue suffering for those who are uninvolved in the initiation process.

Swami’s note aligns with my experience. Each time I initiated someone, the atmosphere in my home grew tense. On one occasion, this even resulted in my son getting hurt. As I realized, being capable of giving initiations alone isn’t enough. Our circumstances also play a significant role here.
