The first day of the 3rd meeting of the Inter-Agency Expert Group on SDG Indicators in Mexico City had the following activities. [Documents and agenda items are posted to the United Nations IAEG-SDG site. ]

Here are three main points of information from Day One:

1) Indicators are now set in 1 of three tiers

Tier #1: Indicator conceptually clear, established methodology and standards available and data regularly produced by countries.

Tier #2: Indicator conceptually clear, established methodology and standards available but data are not regularly produced by countries.

Tier #3: Indicator for which there are no established methodology and standards or methodology/standards are being developed/tested.”

While these tiers are still “provisional”, indicators have been placed within these tiers and are being discussed based on their standing.

2) Consultative process and partnerships is the key to better data collection and methodology development.

Multiple presentation regarding Tier III indicators continued this trend of partnership for better data. As different agencies and organizations flesh out the numbers they need to collect, they will need to seek partners in those areas and regions to better collect and disaggregate data.

3) The indicators are not finished yet.

Discussions yesterday revolved around SDG indicators for Goal 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 and more, with more conversations occurring today on Tier II and III indicators. Indicator language must still be defined, legal frameworks and methodologies are still to be created and tested, and partnerships must still be created to begin to collect data. While the meeting this weekend will create another large push forward for a finalized framework, the details are still being ironed out.
