The 2023 UN General Assembly featured thousands of conferences, sessions, and events related to the Sustainable Development Goals. The team at SDGCounting and our sister project StartingUpGood dedicated countless hours to following the proceedings. Despite our best efforts, there was just too much quality content to ingest in real time. Thankfully the vast majority of important sessions are available for viewing after the fact.

SDG Summit

Convened by the President of the General Assembly, the Summit marked the half-way point to the deadline set for achieving the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. It was the centerpiece of the High-level Week of the General Assembly. It responded to the impact of multiple and interlocking crises facing the world and is expected to reignite a sense of hope, optimism, and enthusiasm for the 2030 Agenda.

International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD)

The International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD) provides a forum for academia, government, civil society, UN agencies, and the private sector to come together to share practical solutions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting

CGI brings together leaders from across the public, private, and philanthropic sectors to take action on the most pressing global challenges, including climate change, health equity, inclusive economic growth, the global refugee crisis, and threats to the rights and prosperity of girls and women.

Goalkeepers Event

This year, Goalkeepers invites you to see the world as it is today, where progress toward the Global Goals is slow and, in some cases, backwards, and imagine a world with a more hopeful vision for the future.

2023 Concordia Annual Summit

As the leading public-private sector forum alongside the UN General Assembly, this year’s gathering established market-led solutions to the greatest challenges of today. Delving into the pivotal role of the private sector in combating disinformation to tackling urgent issues like mental health, environmental sustainability, and emerging technologies, the 13th Annual Summit fostered transformative discussions and deliver actionable outcomes.

Join Devex ​on Sept. 19–21, for a series of events in New York City on the sidelines of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and the UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage.

Science Summit

SSUNGA78 will bring together thought leaders, scientists, technologists, innovators, policymakers, decision-makers, regulators, financiers, philanthropists, journalists and editors, and community leaders to increase health science and citizen collaborations across a broad spectrum of themes ICT, nutrition, agriculture and the environment.

Foreign Policy Tech Forum

This year’s forum will convene the leading minds in technology policy from governments, the private sector, academia, and civil society to explore guardrails on AI, the race for semiconductors and prospects for strengthening global supply chains, and the opportunities for tech deployment in the Global South, among other pressing issues.

WEF Sustainable Development Impact Meetings

The World Economic Forum hosted the Sustainable Development Impact Meetings from September 18–22. Drawing on the Forum’s dedicated communities of purpose, business leaders, policy-makers, international and civil society organizations, innovators and social entrepreneurs will convene in person for a series of carefully curated impact-driven leaders’ dialogues.

Business Fights Poverty Global Goals Summit 2023

Join us at our highly-rated Global Goals Summit, a three-day immersive blend of interactive in-person and online events, for the opportunity to engage in important discussions, make new connections, and gain new insights.

UN Global Compact Leaders Summit

This year’s UN Global Compact Leaders Summit will convene business leaders, UN officials, Government leaders, SDG stakeholders and civil society professionals from across the globe to comprehensively review the private sector’s contribution to advancing the SDGs. The Summit will address business leadership during converging crises, the critical role of a principles-based approach, global trends, and tools and partnerships needed to achieve the 2030 Agenda fully.

AI for Accelerating Progress on the SDGs (with Anthony Blinken)

This event will feature leading AI developers demonstrating the practical AI applications that support sustainable development goals and leading voices discussing the prospects and limitations of AI. This high-level engagement will demonstrate a new commitment by countries, companies, and the multi-stakeholder community to ensuring that AI serves the interests of humanity.

AI and Innovation: Imagine Winning

To fully leverage the potential of AI in an equitable way, we must engage in discourse about the risks it poses and create safeguards in order to ensure a safe and prosperous future for all. Most importantly, as AI has the potential to disrupt systems at a global level, we must include voices from all regions and levels of society. This session will gather technology innovators and investors, high-level government officials, civil society experts, and UN officials to advance guiding principles for creating a global safe environment for such innovations to flourish and help accelerate the SDGs.

Accelerating transformation: Global Sustainable Development Report Snapshot

The recently launched UN Global Sustainable Development Report aims to strengthen the policy-science interface of sustainable development. This session will explore the findings in the report that can help decision-makers to accelerate action and overcome impediments that stand in the way of sustainable development. The focus will be on accelerating transformation through important entry points and enabling science to support this acceleration.

Journalists and Writers Foundation: In the Margins of the UNGA78

The SDGs Conference 2023, formerly known as the UNGA Conference, is the flagship event of the Journalists and Writers Foundation, creating a platform for diverse stakeholders to discuss the Global Agenda 2030, offer innovative solutions, strategies, and policy recommendations to advance the culture of peace, human rights, and sustainable development. As 2023 marks the 8th annual SDGs Conference, this global event gathered over 150 high-level speakers across the globe forming an interdisciplinary group of distinguished panelists to discuss a particular set of agenda over three panel sessions and propose a framework for action for the full and effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Leveraging the Multidimensional Poverty Index to Advance Interlinked SDGs

The event aims to foster a platform for these leaders to share their experiences in and commitments to utilizing MPIs to drive poverty reduction, inform policy actions, and promote overall well-being. It will underscore the significance of political leadership in achieving these goals during this crucial time. This side event aims to place poverty at the centre of the multisectoral discussion to galvanize action and foster collaboration among institutions and sectors to design sustainable solutions having a greater impact on people living in poverty and promoting well-being across society.

Reimagining Tomorrow: Breakthrough in Data and AI for a More Resilient World

As we navigate an era of multifaceted global crises — amplified by climate change — recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI), technologies, and data ecosystems create transformative opportunities to tackle these challenges. Together with global leaders and change-makers, we envisage a world where global partners unlock the potential of data, analytics, and AI to better anticipate crises and pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.

Digital for Development (D4D)

The Digital for Development (D4D) Hub is a strategic platform established by the European Union and its Member States with the aim of fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships and boosting investments to advance a human-centric digital transformation worldwide.

Solve Challenge Finals 2023

An unparalleled live pitch event bringing together global investors, philanthropists and other cross-sector leaders who are making big impacts across the world. During the event, Solve will reveal the 31 most promising tech-based solutions that address our 2023 Global Challenges. A delegate from each of the selected teams will pitch their solutions live for a chance to win over $1 million in prize funding and to meet our community of supporters and collaborators.

High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development

The High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development will take place under the overarching theme: Financing the SDGs for a world where no one is left behind. It will be a critical moment to follow up on the implementation of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, and to show political support at the highest level for financing sustainable development.

HeForShe Summit

Against the context of increased global conflict, growing capabilities of artificial intelligence, and the threat of rising misogyny, the HeForShe Summit will bring together global leaders for current and urgent conversations on how to address these challenges whilst centering women and girls, who are often the most marginalized. In demonstrating their positive impact through critical actions for gender equality, together we aim to inspire other male leaders to follow suit.

Youth Forum on SDG Implementation

The United Nations Project Office on Governance (UNPOG) of the Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government (DPIDG) of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) and Incheon Metropolitan City of the Republic of Korea, will organise the 7th Youth Forum on SDG Implementation on 8 September 2023, under the theme Enabling Youth as Agents of Change for Digital Transformation and Inclusive Climate Action. Young people from Asia and the Pacific, East Africa and beyond will be engaged and presented the opportunity to share their ideas ahead of the Regional Symposium in October 2023.

Select SDG Action Weekend Sessions

To maximize the SDG Summit’s impact, the Secretary General is convening an SDG Action Weekend, which generated opportunities for stakeholders, UN entities, and Member States to convene inside the United Nations Headquarters and set out specific commitments and contributions to drive SDG transformation between now and 2030.

  • Opening Plenary
    The core of the Sunday opening will be a cross-cutting panel on accelerating SDG implementation, featuring representatives from across the development landscape. This panel will interrogate the difficult question of how to scale what works and transform local wins to global successes.
  • Bridging the Financing Gap: Unleashing the Potential of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs)
    Under this session, two panels will be convened to discuss how to increase SMEs’ access to finance in order to unlock their full potential. Panelists include regulators, industry associations, financiers, multinationals, SMEs and technology platform representatives. The objective of the session is to highlight proposed actions that can be taken to unlock the potential of SMEs and strengthen their ability to contribute to the implementation of the SDGs.
  • SDG Digital
    During SDG Digital, senior leaders from governments, the private sector, financial institutions and civil society will come together to underscore how digital technologies can be leveraged to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their targets and mobilize new commitments to advance the use of inclusive and responsible digital technologies to achieve the 2030 Agenda on time.
  • Geospatial Information: Accelerating Implementation of the SDGs
    Show casing the power of Geo-Information to boost the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Power of Data: Unlocking the data dividend for the SDGs
    This session will serve as a launching point for the data partnerships and a unifying moment for streamlining financing for data systems. During the session, organizers will highlight the power of data to catalyse SDG progress through inspiring success stories and it will showcase how the High Impact Initiative will scale towards 2030. Collaborating Member States and partner organizations will also announce commitments to the future success of the Data Dividend HII.
  • Closing Plenary
    The closing plenary will capture what emerged from both days and serve as a critical transition to the SDG Summit, taking forward a sense of solidarity, possibility and determination. Remarks from a UN and a youth rapporteur will provide this recap and speeches from prominent Heads of State will underline the importance of national commitment and action.
