Data Partnerships was a key strategic area of the Cape Town Global Action Plan for Sustainable Development Data. Strategic Area 5 calls for “Multi-stakeholder partnerships for sustainable development data.” What new or past partnerships are beginning to emerge after the UN World Data Forum last month? What is the relationship between data visualization and partnership? We have resources for you.

Facebook, OECD, and the World Bank- Future of Business Survey

Launched in February 2016, the Future of Business Survey utilizes the power of Facebook, with the partnership of OECD and the World Bank, to hear from small and medium-sized small businesses on a monthly basis. The impressive combination of Big Data and survey data is an example of a partnership for the SDGs that can impact policy and research.

DataCollaboratives.org

This partnership resource is dedicated to the value of exchanging data. Created in partnership with GovLab, UNICEF, the Omidyar Network, and NYU Tandon School of Engineering, DataCollaboratives.org provides guidelines and resources for businesses, institutions, and organizations to share and link data that they currently collect.

Amazon Web Services

Featured in the UN World Data Forum session ‘The Future of Data Production’, Amazon Web Services partners with governments, the education sector, and non profits worldwide to provide resources that contribute to data capacity development: storage capabilities, cloud computing, integration, etc. Amazon Web Services is a great example of a business that is using partnership and collaboration to provide a service while also contributing to the monitoring of the Global Goals.

Data Visualization and Partnerships

In many ways, data visualization is a partnership between a data provider or source and a designer or engineer. The UN World Data Forum highlighted various data visualization tools that relied on partnerships to be effective.

Vizzuality is a company that partners with companies and organization to tell fantastic stories through data visualizations and presentations.

Dollar Street was a specific data visualization partnership highlighted at the Data Forum. It uses strong photographic imagery to visualize data, and is created by Gapminder, a Swedish foundation that produces visual and educational resources for teacher and citizens. Gapminder collaborates with data producers and teachers to produce visual, statistics based stories and share them.

The API Highways from the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data is a resource that provides data sources and the power to create applications and visualizations from them. The goal is to empower the developer community to combine data in new ways for further insights, to ultimately achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Anyone can be a partner!
