SDG Indicators — April Meeting Outcomes
Next steps for the Inter-agency Expert Group on SDG Indicators
Since the 3rd meeting of the Inter-agency Expert Group on the Sustainable Development Goal indicators, known as the IAEG-SDGs, in late March and early April, multiple outcome documents have been added to the UN Statistic’s Division IAED-SDG’s official site. Many of these presentation documents succinctly outline the agreements and next steps developed over the meeting period.
Official work plan and next steps. Highlights:
- The initial tier system for indicators, with all revisions and proposals from countries, will be finalized by July 29, 2016
- Once indicator framework is adopted by the UN Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly, IAEG-SDG will begin the process for refinement and develop a plan for review, to be presented at the 28th Session of the Statistical Commission
- the 4th meeting of the IAEG-SDGs will be held in the fall of 2016
Other agenda items from the March meeting include
- establishing baselines for tracking global trends over the course of the SDGs;
- establishing procedures to review indicators at the 5 and 10 year marks, as well as dealing with indicators still needing revisions or indicators that will need revisions over the course of the SDGs due to technology advances or difficulties encountered along the way;
- flow of data from the national to the global level;
- and different perspectives on thematic indicators, gender statistics, sub-regional indicators, and the measurement of rights.
