SDG 6 — Clean Water and Sanitation

Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

The Targets

6.1

By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all

6.2

By 2030, achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations

6.3

By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated waste water and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally

6.4

By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity

6.5

By 2030, implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate

6.6

By 2020, protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes

6.a

By 2030, expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programs, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, waste water treatment, recycling and reuse technologies

6.b

Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management

  • The UN inter-agency mechanism on all freshwater issues, and the primary UN data contact for Goal 6.

6. United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization

  • UNESCO overlaps multiple SDGs, and is dedicated to science and technology in regards to water and Goal 6.

7. United Nations Development Program

  • UNDP is dedicated to environmental and economic issues of the developing world, and includes a data focus on water needs.

8. United Nations Habitat- for a better urban future

  • the UN arm for urban issues. “Promotes socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development.” Contains initiatives on water and access in urban development settings, as well as a sharp focus on sanitation needs.

9. Global Water Partnership

  • a network of multiple stakeholders, including governments, UN agencies, banks, and NGOS with the goal of creating a water secure world.

10. The African Minister’s Council on Water

  • AMCOW is a committee of multiple African countries promoting cooperation on water related topics in Africa. A key regional agency for Goal 6.

11. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

  • The UNFAO is the UN agency focusing on food security, all forms of agriculture, nutrition and sustainability, among other subjects. UN agency that overlaps multiple Goals, including Goal 6.

12. The Global Environment Facility International Waters Transboundary Water Assessment Programme

  • a coordination of multiple UN and non-UN agencies, to provide global assessment relating to freshwater.
