“Just around the next corner is San Diego.” I cheerfully announced to Amber and Dina, cautiously motoring Tally Ho, our Nauticat 43 sailboat closer to shore, and through the patchy green kelp to the channel markers.

We were hopeful for a peaceful, benign entrance through the channel and into the famous Southern California bay.
