Into the Deep

After spending a few nights in Split (one of our favorite places so far), we rented a car and started the next leg of our adventure—which included driving across Croatia and eventually into northern region.

Part of our journey north included visiting the beach town of Makarska. While we were planning our trip to Croatia, we read about this night club called Deep that we thought sounded like fun and wanted to check out. Now, I know what you’re thinking…

“You guys are on your honeymoon. What are you doing going to a club!?”

Truth be told, I don’t think Nicole and I have ever really gone to a night club together. But just because we’re married doesn’t mean we can’t have fun together. Besides, this wasn’t just any ol’ club. It was located on the beach where they took a large cave and literally added a bar, a DJ booth, and some fancy lighting. To us, the club sounded really unique and we figured we had to check it out. Beside, who doesn’t want to party in a cave?!

We went out for a nice dinner and then made our way back to our hotel where we opened a bottle of vodka we previously bought back in Hvar and started mixing drinks in our hotel room while listening to our favorite Spotify playlists and dancing around our room.

Yup. If this sounds like the start of an early 20-somethings Saturday night out, you wouldn’t be wrong!

At sometime around midnight, we decided we should make our way to the cave bar (it was open until 5am so we weren’t too worried about the time). Once we arrived, all we could see were party goers hanging out and dancing around a glowing blue cave entrance. The music that was playing could be heard from blocks away as we approached — but the DJ was actually quite good and played a whole variety of remixes that kept the crowd dancing.

After dancing for awhile, we got some drinks and stepped out of the cave to relax on the edge of the beach where the waves crashed against the shore. The club was quite hot inside so many people were also catching some fresh air or coming out to strip down to their swimsuits (or just their underwear) to enjoy a late night swim.

For us, it was a great night full of fun. Much of our trip has been about relaxing and even a little adulting (read: wine and olive oil tasting). But for this night, it was great to just let our inner youth run free and have some fun in a unique and memorable way.

After our night of dancing, we packed our bags and made our way North. As we were driving, Nicole read that along the way there was a Nikola Tesla memorial in the town of Smiljan—the same small town where he grew up.

Tesla is one of the great minds of our time, like Einstein, Edison, Da Vinci, and Bell to name a few. Personally, I think Tesla isn’t given enough credit for his contributions to science and engineering including the AC electrical current, induction engines, remote controls, wireless communications, x-rays, tube lighting (which we now know as neon lighting), bladeless turbines, and most notably, the Tesla coil. He had over 300 patents for his numerous inventions and it was fascinating to learn about his life and walk through the home he grew up in.

Needless to say, I wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity to visit.

His childhood home has been turned into a memorial complete with a timeline of his life with the attic showcasing some of his many inventions.

After we left the Tesla memorial, we continued on our journey.

Next up, the Plitvice Lakes. One of the big highlights to our whole trip and a place recommended to us by everyone who has been to Croatia before. Stay tuned!
