Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year (RSSY) was released in 2009. The movie was a commercial failure but I like the movie for its story. Ranbir Kapoor is the hero of the movie. His character Harpreet Singh Bedi is a salesman in a renowned computer assembly and service company, AYS.

Think for a moment that you are the sales person of a reputed company. It is a highly competitive job. Every other sales person in your department is competing with you. Everyone has only one thing in their minds; sales. They must be ruthless and ready to go any distance to get closers.

Every month, each and every sales person must fulfill their given quotas by any means possible. Otherwise he would lose his job. Those who can get more sales become star salesman.

There is serious office politics and total lack of trust. You make one mistake and your boss and colleagues will make your life miserable. They do not care about your well-being. The worst is, product quality, good service, trust, honesty, integrity have no value. At the end of the day, only sales matters. It is a toxic environment. Everybody hates their jobs.

In such an intensely competitive environment, Harpreet Singh Bedi, a young graduate comes to work as an intern. Harpreet comes from a middle-class family. He is not a good student but he is ready to work hard to make-up for his shortcomings. He joined AYS with dreams of earning an honest living with honest day’s work but everything changes when he was humiliated by his boss for not agreeing to bribe a high official. His colleagues do not respect him. He is the butt of jokes in the office.

The movie then shows how Harpreet rises up to the occasion and proves everyone wrong.

Acting:

Though early in his career, Ranbir Kapoor showed his acting prowess in the movie. His portrayal of the character Harpreet Singh was superb. His performance in the movie won him Filmfare Best Actor (Critics’ Choice) Award in 2010.

Manish Choudhary won the Filmfare Best Villain Award for Sunil Puri, the ruthless boss of AYS.

Another actor whom I liked was Naveen Kaushik. He plays Nithin Rathod, a ruthless salesman who uses every underhanded tactics to remove his opponents.

Lesson for entrepreneurs:

Those who want to become entrepreneurs should watch Rocket Singh. The way Harpreet Singh fights the system is admirable. Harpreet’s biggest strength lies in understanding people. He is a people’s person. He sees potential in everyone and tries to utilize that potential. He remains loyal to his business partners through and through.
Here is a scene for you from Rocket Singh. Harpreet is talking to his boss Sunil Puri. He says that he does not understand numbers but people and to him business is people. There are not shortcuts. If you make them happy your numbers will go up.
