The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Jean-Dominique Bauby found himself on a bed suffering from “Locked in cyndrome.” When anybody is affected by this disease, he gets paralyzed. Only sometimes he could move his lips lightly but could not speak. Only her left eye was working well among all organs of the body. Doctors even stitched his right eyes. At the moment, man does not get inspiration to fight for living, but at this hospital, by getting help from the nurses, Jean-Dominique Bauby wrote his memoir on his bed “Le scaphandre et le papillon.” Journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby repeatedly opened and closed his eyelids and by following the nurses’ signs, nurse wrote this auto biography book. The movie The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is based on his memoir. Only by his eyes, actor Mathieu Amalric expressed excellently Bauby’s life in the hospital. The extraordinary story of this film won Golden Globe, numerous film awards including the Cannes Film Festival Award. This film was released in French in 2007. At first, Johnny Depp was supposed to play but he passed it on due to schedule problem. Mathieu Amalric played this character instead of Johnny Depp. Extra ordinary construction, presentation, eyelids move around two minutes to say a word; camera angel would reveal the emotion to a lot to viewers.

“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” is a biographical drama film based on Jean-Dominique Bauby’s memoir of the same name. Released in 2007, the movie received numerous awards and received rave reviews from critiques all over the world.

The opening scene shows Dominique Bauby waking up from a three-week coma in a hospital. He is suffering from “Locked-In” syndrome. It is a rare disease where the patient is mentally normal but totally paralyzed physically.

From the first scene, Julian Schnabel tries to get viewers’ attention by capturing the hospital scene through Bauby’s left eye. He then starts to dictate his memoir to the nurse using his left eye. The important events of his life are showed in flashback. The nurse shows one alphabet after another and Bauby waits when the appropriate alphabet would be shown to him. The whole process is lengthy and painful because in his mind Bauby is talking like a normal person but expressing his thoughts is so painful, tedious and long. Anyone looking at the scene will feel Bauby’s pain. What is life? The viewer would feel the desperation of living in him.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Upon seeing the proper alphabet, he would wink once and that is all. He cannot do anything else. He lost himself in old memories. He will think about his father who died at the 92 year. His father was speaking and crying at the same time. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a very emotional movie.

This 112 minute long movie will perhaps change definition of your help. The desire to be alive and the effort of narrating one’s own story will create some questions in our mind. For most of us, life is beautiful and it is great to remain healthy and enjoy the beauty of this world. We enjoy every moment of our life. However, for Dominique’s wife, it is just the opposite.

When an inspirational story is based on real life then we perhaps realize the wonderful gift of God to human. We should try to enjoy each moment and try to do good deeds. There is only one life and after death, nothing remains of us. You will not be able to roam around as you wish, get the person you love. After death, you cannot say to anyone, “I love you”. Life is short and we must try to enjoy each and every moment of our limited time.
Hope everyone will like The Diving Bell and the Butterfly very much.
