Facebook’s Onavo Protect VPN Collects Data Even When Turned Off

Facebook recently launched “Onavo”, a VPN service. The app is available in the iOS mobile app store as Onavo Protect. Facebook acquired Onavo in October 2013 The app faced criticism back in February because it shared information with Facebook. VPNs are privacy products, and if this one shares information with Facebook, that completely defeats the purpose.

The app’s description in the app store says, “Because we’re part of Facebook, we also use this info to improve Facebook products and services, gain insights into the products and services people value, and build better experiences.”

People use VPNs to keep websites like Facebook from tracking them and collecting their information. However, because this one is owned by one of the largest data tracking sites on the internet, users should be concerned. All VPNs have access to your browsing information, but those that focus on privacy assure users that their data is not tracked or stored. Onavo explicitly states that it uses your information.

Onavo tracks WiFi and mobile data usage when installed, and even when not in use. This sounds eerily similar to Facebook tracking even non-Facebook users on the web. If you are looking for a VPN that keeps your data private, we recommend you look elsewhere.
