The Mannequin Challenge goes 360

Check out our VR take on the viral sensation

It’s hard to believe it’s already been a month since the Secret Location team moved into our new digs at eOne’s downtown Toronto headquarters.

Between getting settled and digging in on all the exciting projects on the go, it felt like doing something fun as a group was overdue. We’ve written before about how easy it can be in an office to put off the things that aren’t “real work” when deadlines are looming.

But what’s 30 minutes in the long run?

After being totally won over by all the Mannequin Challenge videos flooding his timelines (and okay, fine, a failed attempt to get his dog to sit still for one), SL’s Art Director Andy Garcia had a better idea: Why not get the office in on one?

And better yet: Why not make it a 360 video?

Secret Location does deal primarily in 360 content, after all. And by shooting with the Nikon KeyMission 360, it meant no one would have to take extra time to stitch the scene together.

The shoot itself was pretty standard — We scouted a cool looking spot in the office (the bridge just looked too cool in 360), the gear was tested, shots were blocked, and then everyone got into costume.

Oh yeah, did we mention the costumes? Try to see if you can spot ’em all.

About half of the staff had VR headsets on, and everyone else was interacting with what they were seeing. Think of it as a bunch of mini-VR vignettes.

The shoot only took about 30 minutes, and in the end we didn’t just get a pretty cool video out of it, but it injected a nice bit of fun and energy into our afternoon. Time well spent.

(And for those wondering, Andy still can’t get his dog to sit still for a Mannequin Challenge of his own. We still think he’s a good boy.)
