Do you have a data breach response plan? If not, you should. According to Cybersecurity Market Report, cyber attacks cost businesses $400 billion to $500 billion a year.

As cyber attacks and their subsequent costs increase, the demand for cybersecurity professionals is rising. According to Michael Brown, CEO at Symantec, by 2019, cybersecurity positions will top 6 million globally with a projected shortfall of 1.5 million candidates.

So what’s an organization to do?

Understand it’s not a software issue, it’s a people issue. Throwing more money at software solutions won’t solve your security woes. You need people with security expertise to leverage your software and maximize its potential.

Invest in current IT personnel. IT staff with good networking or programming fundamentals, plus some understanding of system architecture, make great candidates for cyber crimefighters. Set aside any concerns you might have about creating other openings in your IT department by moving staff around — qualified IT professionals are more abundant and easier to find than cybersecurity professionals. If you have loyal IT employees eager to learn with a desire to grow, providing cybersecurity training can be a win-win for all involved.

Unfortunately, cyber attacks are only gaining momentum with no signs of slowing down. Meanwhile, the need for qualified cybersecurity professionals has never been greater. It’s time to take action.
