Welcome to the Secureware blog! We’ll be posting information on our various projects here, but before we get into the first project we want to tell you about, we need to let you know a little about who we are. In short, Secureware is a blockchain startup focused on the secure development of blockchain systems. We provide security audit services as well as incubate and build our own projects.
In this inaugural post, we’re going to tell you about B3PO, a sponsored, open source project to increase voter participation on college campuses via absentee or mail-in ballots and tell you how and why you should be a part of it.
Voting is one of our most important rights as American citizens, but many college students don’t exercise their right to influence our country’s direction. For example, in our 2016 election, only ⅓ of students who registered to vote actually cast their ballot, the lowest turnout in the last 40 years. There a number of reasons why this is the case, including of all things not knowing where to buy stamps. We’re positing that technology can help remedy this. A poll conducted by Coinbase indicated that 18% of college students now own cryptocurrency, that, combined with our work in the blockchain space, led us to developing B3PO.
At the Ethereum San Francisco Hackathon last month, Secureware’s developers were awarded a prize for launching an open source project that provided an electronic option to cast a ballot: B3PO. The near term goal was to make voting for the midterms (via absentee or mail-in ballot) as easy as possible for students through the use of the Ethereum blockchain and a robot. Though we weren’t able to pull off students voting with the system in just three weeks, we did complete a successful proof of concept filling out two of our own ballots. The long term goal is to enable college students, nursing homes, and anyone who has an impediment to vote and make an impact on the 2020 presidential election!
In order for this to work, we need to build a community to continue to develop the system. Though we’ve gotten it started, there is a long way to go and the only way for B3PO to make an impact is for you to get involved. We’re reaching out to college campuses across the country to help with development, engagement and finally participation. With the midterm elections completed, it’s time to get to work making B3PO available for the 2020 elections.
- Create an easier method of voting and make an impact
- You don’t have stamps, but have ether
- Take part in a real world application of blockchain (finally explain blockchain to grandma)
- Gain exposure to career development and potential jobs from one of our well-funded partners
What you’re provided with:
- Access to an AxiDraw Robot
- Access to B3PO’s Github repo
- Support from Secureware to provide guidance and security audits for the development process
This is the just the beginning of an effort to use emerging technology to enable college students to vote — we hope in record numbers in future years. Be a part of a fun project that can have a lasting impact on the direction of our country. The decisions made by your elected officials will impact the future — importantly your own. Make sure you, fellow, and future college students are easily able to exercise this right and have your say.
Stay tuned for more posts about B3PO and our other projects!
