Why You Should Tip Your Server
Why pay them extra for doing their job?
In America, restaurants do not pay servers a livable wage for their hourly work. Although some states have higher minimum wages for tipped employees, most corporations pay their servers as low as $2.13 an hour.
Personally, this is what I receive from the corporate restaurant I work at. However, taxes end up taking almost the entirety of this wage so I typically get $2–3 (sometimes $0) biweekly from the company.
This means almost my entire income depends on the tips I receive.
Other countries treat restaurant servers much differently. For example, Australia’s minimum wage for servers is $12.81 (AU $17.91) an hour. In Japan, servers are paid around $9.86 (1,072 yen) an hour. There’s several countries where tipping is not expected; as servers are already compensated for their hard work.
Moving from a country where tipping is uncustomary to America requires knowledge of America’s super low minimum wage for restaurant servers.
